iPhone 4.0
The Breakdown:
16 and 32 gig models will cost $199 and $299 respectively, and are available in both white and black
I own a 3GS model, and as I write this I’ve used exactly 2 of its total 16 gigs of space. As such, 32 gigs seems to be a bit of overkill, but your mileage may vary. Oh, and I think any object that gets handled as much as the average iPhone does should never be offered in white.
Thinner than the current 3GS model, and most other phones on the market
This one is an excellent perk for those of us who keep our phones in our pockets. And while I’m on the subject, if you’re one of those unfortunate souls who think holstering your phone on your belt like a Sig Sauer is a great idea, please stop purchasing my electronic devices and go back to the things you know. Like Bluetooth earpieces, compact discs, and your AOL email.
Higher resolution imaging
960 x 640 resolution. Not a lot to say here other than it’s about damn time. Most other phones were making the iPhone look silly in this category. And since they’re planning to stream Netflix to iPhones soon, it had to happen.
Longer battery life
Another welcome addition, although I’ll believe it when I see it. Besides, given how quickly my current iPhone loses its charge, this isn’t exactly a quantum leap in electrical engineering.

Gyroscope
Outside of the obvious gaming potential, the interaction with the “street view” on Google Maps and other apps interests me a great deal.

Front Facing Video Camera
Yep, that’s it. The most exciting part of the whole deal. Video phones have always been an indicia of living in “the future.” Like flying cars, robotic servants and lycra jumpsuits. Sure, it will only work if the person on the other end has an iPhone 4. And yeah, it requires a wi-fi connection. (It won’t run on the AT&T network.) But it’s still pretty goddamn awesome.
C’mon, you know you’re feeling me here…
So, the answer you’ve been waiting for is “yes, I’m going to purchase the new iPhone.”
And, given that AT&T is allowing just about everyone to renew their contracts if they buy one, odds are you will too…
So I guess I’ll see you on the 24th.
j.s.

I KNOW!!!
I was so ready to move on to the Android OS, but this… This may very well be worth 2 more years of AT&T.
::butterflies!::
Gotta say, Im not a fan of the apple reich.
Here are a few of my reasons why droid makes apple sauce.
-If I want to replace my battery, Im a grown up and can do it. I dont want to have to send it in to have it “worked on”
-If I want to upgrade and switch out memory I can do it.
-Open source is awesome and enables all sorts of ideas and possiblities to come out. You can setup a droid to become a wifi hotspot and tether laptops to use the internet connection from it.
-Multi tasking – Apple is just catching up.
-Full blown blue tooth, I can make any kind of blue tooth connection and transfer data to whatever I want. Apple only allows blue tooth connections to headsets or between another Iphone (app needed.)
Anyhoo, we have seen this cartoon before with apple, they will be trying to play catchup from here on out with competitors.
Just my opinion…
I completely agree with you about open source development. If people want porn apps on their iPhone, they should be able to d/l it. The whole App approval (AppApp?), thing is a bit draconian. Oh, and I want mobile Firefox goddammit.
I’ve actually never had an issue with battery replacement, and I’ve been using the iPhone for about 4 years now. Nor do I really need to upgrade its components. The day that phones get the processing power/input capability of gaming systems is the day I’ll make the move to hardware that I can keep up-to-date. =]
I hear a lot about the whole “multi-tasking” thing, but I just don’t understand it. What are you doing on your phone that requires lots of different programs to be open all at once? Because apparently I’m not doing it…
And I hate those goddamn “Uhura” earpieces that BlueTools the world over wear, so there’s no need there. I actually already have the transfer app (Sobriquet and I xfer pics that way), as well as the PayPal app that sends money across accounts via BlueTooth. I’ve never even used the latter. The phone syncs with my iTunes when it charges, so there’s a regular file update to my desktop via USB… What exactly do I need BlueTooth for?
Now I’m far from an Apple fanboy, but I’m going to have to disagree on the ” play catch-up” angle. Apple’s development cycle DID lag quite a bit, which allowed their competitors to gain ground in the smart-phone market. But if anything it’s the iPhone that’s been driving this bus, and the others are still just jumping seats toward the front. We’ll see if the 4.0 version is enough to keep them behind the wheel.
Here is an example for multitasking: I get in my car, hit the media button on my steering wheel. I give the voice command, “Blue tooth audio” a blue tooth connection is made with the droid and begins playing music from the car stereo. I pull up a navigation app to get to the new resturaunt my wife and I want to try out. As I near picking her up I hit the media button again. I say “Phone”, “Call Kari” music quits playing and the phone dials through the car speaker I let her know that Im about to pick her up and we chat a bit. After she hangs up, music resumes playing where it left off.
I Pick Kari up at work, check weather real quick while music continues to play, the navigation app is running and available, a blue tooth connection is still current and the droid is running as a wifi hotspot. The wife hops in the car readies her Itouch and uses the droid’s wifi to surf the web and look at the menu. And were off again…
The above scenario is not possible with the iphone.
Your right on many levels that there are workarounds for alot of things so “why would I need…” The point is that its just there if you do. Your not constrained to finding work arounds or waiting for an app you just use the device.
Dont get me wrong, the Iphone is a fine enough peice of hardware when its said and done. My major beef is with apple itself telling developers what hardware they can access. Blocking users from using flash wether they want to or not. Declaring if you want just a bit more room for apps, music, pictures etc and go from 8GB to 16GB, you have to get a new phone completely. Thats all kinda weird when you think about it.
Since when did companies start kicking ass by telling its customers thats just how it is? =P
Oh yeah, I hope you start feeling better soon btw. being sick sucks bad. =(
